What prompted you to create DataMotion?

We came up with the idea that launched DataMotion in 1995, when our e-commerce software business had a need to securely communicate license keys with customers we had never met before. We also needed tracking to know that our customer received and opened their keys, completing the digital delivery. If customers didn’t open their keys after one week, our customer service department would contact them and offer them assistance. The rest is history!

How has your experience been-how has founding DataMotion shaped you?

As a founder, you end up wearing many hats and learn firsthand how various departments depend on each other and need to be in alignment for the company to be successful. You also learn that you can’t do it all yourself, and need to surround yourself with smart people that can pull the organization to new heights.

What is your vision for the future of DataMotion?

There’s a huge need for organizations to modernize their business processes to not only be competitive, but to survive. At the same time, they need to comply with the ever increasing burden of privacy and security regulations. To accomplish this, they need solutions that are enterprise grade, yet easy on their IT staff and users. A cloud offering where they don’t need to run additional servers or VMs would be nice, too. This has been DataMotion’s area of focus for over a decade, and it continues to evolve in ways that give our customers a strategic advantage.

I see DataMotion starting to be less of a webmail provider as our core business and going towards being a front-end provider of secure messaging with API access to other secure client-side data stores. This will allow us to scale very well in addition to providing a robust versatile platform that customers can build their infrastructure against.

Why did you decide to work at DataMotion?

Married for 35 years with 4 grown sons, one of whom is a D1 NCAA Champion and Olympic Trials track finalist in the 800m. We also had two foster sons for 5 years.
I have 3 masters degrees, including a Masters of Divinity, and passed my PhD qualifying exams for Computer Science.
Founded my own company and managed it for 16 years (2MM revenue with 10 employees) out of college, then entered corporate America.
We love outdoor activities and fantasize being on the Amazing Race.

Communication and information exchange will be fundamental to improving care and wellness. It will also be a cornerstone for facilitating the fee-for-value model. I am a singer/songwriter & musician with an album I recorded in 2007 called “Follow Your Bliss”

I make professional cakes-mostly fondant. Like wedding cakes! But just for friends. WAY too much work.
I wrote a book I can hold in my hands
I once helped rebuild a Camaro engine from start to finish. I was under that car 5 hours straight trying to line up 2 bolts with the bell housing as we put the engine in. Exhilarating!

Was born in a country that no longer exists, grew up in the city that was renamed 3 times over 300 years.
Had an officer rank in the Soviet Army, but luckily never served.
Always wanted to fly, but had to resort to biking.
Hiked the shores of the Black Sea, the White Sea, the Red Sea, and the Dead Sea. The Yellow Sea is still on the list.

Why did you decide to work at DataMotion?

I have been in the software development business for many years now both as a contractor as well as a company employee. When I interviewed with DataMotion, I was looking for a company where I could make a significant contribution as well as find opportunities to grow professionally. I was also looking for employees that were both professional as well as effective in terms of building solid software solutions, meeting user needs and in supporting their products. I found all of this and more in DataMotion.

Just a couple of months now, but enough to get a sense of the company’s purpose, position in the industry and vision for the future.

How has your experience been?

It has been great so far. It has been both challenging as well as rewarding. A great bunch of people that I work with. I love the camaraderie , professionalism, mutual support, effective communications and in the way they are able to express and effectively track expectations and progress and inspire greatness. There are opportunities to work with the latest technologies and dedicated professionals here. What’s not to love?

What is your vision for the future of DataMotion?

I see DataMotion continuing to expand in its niche in the technology market and continuing to take a more prominent role as a secure email/date service provider as we take on larger clients and meet more and more challenging projects.

Give me 3-5 fun facts about you

I enjoy online gaming, nature, hiking and outdoor sports, bowling, and of course, software development!
I am fluent in Spanish.
I have two girls Jessica 12, and Alannah 10.
My wife is from the Philippines. I met her there.
I have visited and/or lived in all of the countries in Central America.
I once climbed a glacier in Alaska.

Why did you decide to work at DataMotion?

I was told about an opportunity at datamotion by Matt, and decided to come in for an interview. The position available seemed very interesting to me. It would give me an opportunity to work with all of the IT and networking skills that I have developed, as well as get back into doing some engineering which is what I had majored in, in college. The company seemed like a great opportunity for me to grow and excel.

How has your experience been?

So far my experience has been excellent. I have been involved in numerous meetings which have given me a good idea of what the company is all about and what we offer. I enjoy the environment of being able to work together as a team on projects but also having my own responsibilities to complete. It is a comfortable and fairly relaxed environment and that has made my experience and transition to this company very good. The world of email encryption is complex but I’m enjoying it!

What is your vision for the future of DataMotion?

It seems to me that DataMotion is continuously expanding and I am excited to be a part of that. We are bring some new technologies to the table, and I enjoy experimenting with and implementing new things that will help the company.

I am an avid Yankees/Giants/Devils fan
I play Hockey
I am very into mobile devices and customizing them with custom firmware.

I was looking for an organization that would provide me with challenging opportunities while maintaining cohesiveness and a sense of “team”. My interview with the entire Portland team convinced me that this would be a great opportunity for me.

Great! Clayton and the team are patiently providing an excellent framework for coming up to speed and have taken the time to explain and properly introduce me to the complexities of our products and solutions. I have a bit further to go, but I am confident that I will be fully integrated into the team and making significant contributions to our products very quickly.

What is your vision for the future of DataMotion?

By continuing to improve the features and dependability of our products, we will expand our customer base and profitability.

Give me 3-5 fun facts about you

I am a father of 3 children (Spenser 25, Seth 24, Erin 22), who have all graduated college and are gainfully employed! I remarried in 2012 and now have 3 step children (Kiernan 18, Tristan 14, Ethan 11).
I am an avid runner (25-50 miles a week) and health nut, and have participated in several half marathons, and look forward to running in the Portland marathon in 2014.
I love DIY home remodeling, and since 2008 have transformed my home from a 4 bedroom, 1 bath house into a 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath house, completely replaced the walls, floors, electrical, and plumbing along the way.
I enjoy hiking, camping, skiing all over Oregon and Washington!

I’ve been married to my wife Cari for almost 15 years and have a 12 year old son, Nick.
I love golf and will play anywhere, anytime. Unfortunately, I don’t get out as much as I’d like.
I took up guitar a little over a year ago. I’m not progressing as fast as I would like (translation: I’m terrible), but I enjoy the challenge.
